AMPK is a key protein for metabolic regulation. When the energy supply is insufficient, the ratio of AMP/ATP is upregulated, and AMPK is activated to inhibit anabolism. AICAR activates AMPK but does not affect ATP, ADP, and AMP levels. At the cellular or animal level, AICAR promotes non-insulin-dependent glucose uptake in skeletal muscle by activating AMPK. AICAR-induced skeletal muscle glucose uptake cannot be blocked by PI3K inhibitors.
