FAO: Tea prices will remain high in 2012

According to a report by United Nations Radio on February 29, according to FAO's forecast, due to the shortage of tea production, tea prices will continue to strengthen in 2012. Higher tea prices will enable tea-producing countries to increase their export revenue by 2.2% in 2011, significantly improving rural income and household food security in these countries.

The average price of tea in 2011 was 2.85 US dollars per kilogram, and it will continue to strengthen in 2012. This is mainly due to the rapid increase in per capita income of China, India and other emerging economies, which has increased tea consumption. The latest data shows that in 2010, global tea consumption increased by 5.6% to 4 million tons. The total consumption of tea in China increased by 1.4% in 2010 to 1.06 million tons, becoming the world's largest consumer of tea. India's tea consumption in 2010 increased by 1% to 830,000 tons.

As tea demand grows, so does production. Global tea production in 2010 increased by 4.2% to 4.1 million tons. Due to the high price, black tea production increased by 5.5% and green tea production increased by 1.9%. China continues to maintain its status as the world's largest tea producer with a production of 1.4 million tons and a share of 33% of the world total.

Looking into the next decade, it is estimated that the world’s black tea production will increase by nearly 1.9% year-on-year, and it will reach 3.28 million tons in 2021, and the price will drop slightly to 2.75 US dollars per kilogram. At the same time, the growth rate of world green tea production is estimated at 7.2%, and it is expected to reach 2.6 million tons by 2021.
