Just last week, Brayden had his very first playdate with a buddy from school. You know how St. Patrick's Day had me surrounded by all those vibrant, cheerful colors? Well, those bright hues were still lingering in my mind, so I thought it would be fun to infuse that same energy into our playdate activities. Alongside the usual boy antics—Legos, superhero battles, and sword fights (which somehow always end with someone falling into the pool—I won't mention names)—we also tried making these jello-infused playdough "cookies." They were such a hit! And hey, anything that keeps the kids entertained while keeping their limbs intact counts as a win in my book. A sprinkle of rainbow sugar never hurts either.
I mean, who doesn’t love something both easy to make and super engaging for kids? Even without little visitors around, my own brood would go wild over these. Here’s how we did it:
// Ingredients
- 3.5 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1.5 cups of softened butter
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring
- Your choice of Jello flavors
// Process
- Start by mixing the flour and baking powder in a medium-sized bowl. In another bowl, beat the butter until it becomes nice and creamy. Gradually add the sugar and continue beating until it’s light and fluffy. Next, blend in the egg and vanilla extract. Slowly incorporate the dry flour mixture into the wet ingredients until everything is well combined.
- Split the dough into four portions. Take one portion back to the mixer and add two tablespoons of your chosen Jello flavor along with some food coloring. Mix gently until the color is evenly distributed, then take it out and knead it by hand. Repeat this process with each section, ensuring each piece has its unique color and flavor. Once you're done, it's time to get creative—play around with the dough until you're ready to bake!
- Form the dough into 1-inch balls and roll them in a bowl filled with leftover Jello from the packets. Gently flatten each ball and arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie. This will give them enough room to spread out during baking.
- Pop the tray into the oven preheated to 350°F (175°C). Bake for approximately 8 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool on the tray for about 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to finish cooling completely.
And voila! Enjoy the sweet, colorful results of your hard work. The kids loved every bite—they couldn’t stop giggling as they admired the rainbow hues. Honestly, it’s not just the kids who enjoyed it; I found myself sneaking a few myself. It’s amazing what a little creativity can do to elevate a simple recipe.
