Harvester seasonal storage to six defenses

The harvester experiences its peak during the autumn harvest season, but throughout the rest of the year, it has limited operating hours and long periods of inactivity. If not properly maintained, this downtime can significantly reduce its lifespan. To ensure the machine remains in good condition, it's essential to follow the "Six Preventives" for proper storage and care. 1. **Prevent Sun Exposure** Harvesters come in various sizes and models, and some require specialized storage facilities. However, many operators opt for simple shelters, which may not provide adequate protection. Prolonged exposure to sunlight and weather elements can cause damage to the machine’s body. As the saying goes, "If you can afford a machine, you should be able to take care of it." Therefore, regardless of the model, it’s best to store the harvester in a dedicated, covered area to protect it from the elements. 2. **Prevent Rust and Corrosion** After each harvesting season, it's crucial to thoroughly clean the machine—removing dirt, debris, grains, and metal shavings. Use high-pressure water to wash both the inside and outside, then dry it completely before storing. Lubrication points should be cleaned and re-oiled or sealed with grease. Additionally, apply rust-proof paint to any exposed metal parts to prevent oxidation and corrosion. 3. **Prevent Mold and Deformation** Improper storage of belts and rubber components can lead to mold, deformation, or deterioration. After use, remove these parts, wipe them dry, and store them in a well-ventilated area away from pests. For drive chains, clean them with diesel or kerosene, dry them, and soak them in oil for 15–20 minutes or overnight. Once the oil stops dripping, apply grease, wrap them in paper, and store in a dry, ventilated place. 4. **Prevent Rubber Aging** Rubber and plastic parts are prone to aging due to UV exposure and environmental factors, which can cause cracking or loss of elasticity. To prevent this, apply hot paraffin oil on the surface of rubber components and store them indoors in a cool, dry, and shaded location. 5. **Prevent Plastic Deformation** Parts like springs, belts, blades, and tires can become permanently deformed if left under stress or stored improperly. To avoid this, support heavy components such as tires and loosen pressure springs. Remove and store belts separately, and lay the cutter bar flat or hang it vertically when not in use. 6. **Prevent Loss of Small Parts** Small tools, spare parts, and accessories are easy to lose if not properly managed. It’s important to keep track of all items, assign them to specific personnel for custody, and ensure they are returned to their designated places after use. In addition, the battery should be removed and stored separately using either an intermittent charging method or dry storage to maintain its performance and longevity. By following these six preventive measures, you can extend the life of your harvester and ensure it is always ready for the next season.
