The harvester experiences a seasonal peak during the autumn harvest, but throughout the year, it has limited working hours and long periods of inactivity. If not properly maintained, this inactivity can significantly reduce its lifespan. To ensure longevity and optimal performance, the harvester must undergo what is known as the "Six Defenses."
1. **Protection from Sun Exposure**
Harvesters come in various sizes and models, with some requiring specialized storage. Some operators, to avoid extra effort, opt for simple shelters that offer minimal protection. However, exposure to wind and rain can cause damage over time. As the saying goes, "If you can afford the machine, you should be able to take care of it." Therefore, regardless of the model, it's crucial to store the harvester in a dedicated, covered area whenever possible.
2. **Prevention of Rust and Corrosion**
After each harvesting season, it’s important to thoroughly clean the harvester, removing dirt, metal shavings, debris, and grain residue. The machine should be washed with high-pressure water, dried completely, and then stored in a dry, well-ventilated area. All lubrication points should be cleaned, oiled, or sealed. Additionally, rust-proof paint should be applied to any exposed or damaged areas to prevent corrosion.
3. **Avoiding Mildew and Deformation**
Improper storage of belts and other rubber components can lead to mildew or deformation. These parts should be removed after use, wiped clean, and stored in a dry, ventilated space away from pests. For drive chains, they should be washed with diesel or kerosene, dried, and then soaked in oil for 15–20 minutes or overnight. After draining, apply grease and wrap them in paper before storing in a dry location.
4. **Preventing Rubber Aging**
Rubber and plastic parts on the harvester are prone to aging due to UV exposure and environmental factors. To slow this process, apply hot paraffin oil to the surface of rubber components and store them indoors in a cool, dry, and shaded area.
5. **Avoiding Plastic Deformation**
Parts like springs, belts, blades, and tires may deform if left under stress or improperly stored. Support structures should be used where necessary. Tires should be lifted off the ground to prevent flat spots, tension springs should be loosened, and belts should be removed and stored separately. Long cutter bars should be laid flat or hung vertically.
6. **Preventing Loss of Small Parts**
All tools, spare parts, and accessories should be accounted for and stored by designated personnel. This includes special tools and replacement parts, which should be returned to their proper places after use to avoid misplacement.
In addition, the battery should be removed and stored separately using either an intermittent charging method or dry storage to maintain its health and extend its life. Proper maintenance during downtime ensures the harvester remains in top condition for the next season.
