After the fertilizer is applied to the soil, its nutrients are absorbed and utilized by the crop, but only a small part, which is 1/3 to 1/2 of the amount of fertilizer, and most of the remaining nutrients are lost in different forms. Taking nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers that we usually apply as an example, the fate of nutrients after applying them to the soil generally includes the following four types:
(1) being used by crops;
(2) Leaked by water;
(3) in the gaseous state;
(4) Residue in soil.
In different soils, the number of these four kinds of fate varies greatly. In the case of ammonium sulfate, it is applied on the surface of cultivated land. In the calcareous (alkaline) and non-calcareous (partially acidic) soils, the nitrogen nutrients are absorbed and utilized by the crops, which are respectively 22.5% of the used amount. 50%; residual parts in soil were 26.3% and 21.4%, respectively. It can be seen that in the alkaline soil, the loss of nitrogen is greater than that of the acidic soil. In nitrogen fertilizers, the stability of ammonium sulfate is the best. If it is replaced with urea and ammonium bicarbonate, the loss will be more, and their utilization rate is less than 30% of the application amount. Most of the loss of nitrogen is gaseous and part of it is lost. Phosphorus fertilizers applied to the soil, most of the phosphorus nutrients are left in the soil, which can account for 80% of the total application amount. Phosphorus residues in the soil can be used for the next crop. Phosphorus nutrients are rarely used. Leaked and vaporized in water. Potassium fertilizers applied to the soil, the potassium utilization rate of the nutrient is relatively high among these three nutrients, generally about 50%.
