Fish oil contains an omega-3 fatty acid that can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, slow down the formation of siltation in the arteries, and even lower blood pressure. Therefore, the American Heart Association now recommends that healthy people eat at least two high-fat fish every week.
A study conducted at the University of Barcelona showed that mice with omega-3 fatty acids were added to the diet of obese mice and that mice showed increased sensitivity to insulin. If this finding also affects humans, then the reaction of omega-3 fatty acids to insulin can be used to develop new drugs to reduce the risk of diabetes.
Other scientists are trying to obtain evidence that fish oil can improve cognitive function. At the same time, an international research team is tracking the mechanism of the protective effects of omega-3 fatty acids and docosahexaenoic acid in fish oil. Scientists have determined that the human body converts DHA into a substance called resolvin D2 that prevents the adhesion of neutrophils to the blood vessel walls and triggers an inflammatory reaction. In rat sepsis experiments, resolvin D2 can reduce widespread swelling without compromising the basic ability of the immune system to fight infection. A similar mechanism may be hidden behind the cardiovascular benefits of fish oil, as inflammation is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
