In everyday life, there are numerous organic wastes that can be creatively repurposed into natural fertilizers. By properly processing these materials, you can turn what would otherwise be discarded into valuable nutrients for your plants.
One effective method is to create liquid fertilizer using items like rotten vegetable leaves, fruit peels, fish and chicken scraps, bones, eggshells, and even moldy nuts or seeds. Place these in a small jar or container, add water, and sprinkle a small amount of trichlorfon (an insecticide) to prevent pests. Let it ferment at high temperatures for a few weeks. Once the process is complete, strain the liquid and dilute it with water before applying it to your garden. This homemade fertilizer is rich in nutrients and can greatly benefit your plants.
Additionally, some of these waste materials can be mixed directly with potting soil. Add a little water, mix well, and place the mixture in a large plastic bag. Seal it tightly and let it sit for several weeks. After fermentation, it can be used as a solid compost to enrich the soil.
Another approach is to make compost by choosing an appropriate location and digging a pit about 60 to 80 cm deep. Start by placing a 10 cm layer of ash at the bottom to help with drainage and odor control. Then, add layers of organic waste such as vegetable scraps, animal manure, fish scales, eggshells, and bones. Sprinkle some insecticide between layers to deter pests, cover with a 10 cm layer of garden soil, and keep the pile moist. This method works best when done in the fall, as the cooler weather helps control odors and speeds up decomposition. Once fully fermented, the compost will have a rich, earthy smell and can be safely mixed into your soil without any unpleasant smells.
By recycling kitchen and garden waste into fertilizer, you not only reduce trash but also promote a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. It’s a simple yet powerful way to give back to the earth while nurturing your plants.
