Astronauts use the MinION sequencing DNA for the first time in space to "perfectly match" the results on Earth.

Kate Rubens, graduated from the Department of Biochemistry and Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2005, received a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology, and entered NASA training in 2009 to become a qualified astronaut.

NASA astronaut Kate Rubens first used the MinION sequencer for DNA sequencing in space.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) official website announced on the 30th that NASA astronaut Kate Rubens successfully completed DNA sequencing under microgravity conditions on the International Space Station in the past weekend, which indicates that humans have greeted A new era of genetic sequencing of living organisms in space.

Rubens, who just completed the sequencing task, said she and her colleagues on the ground have witnessed genetic and systems biology research coming into space. “We are now opening up a whole new field of science – space genomics and systems biology.”

This space sequencing is part of the Biomolecular Sequencing Research Project. The sequencing uses the MinION sequencer from Oxford Nanopore, which is handy and convenient. The principle of sequencing is to apply current through the nanopore, and let the liquid containing the test sample flow through the detector. Different DNA molecules will cause different current changes, and the organism of the gene sequence can be identified by the current change.

The project team brought DNA samples of mice, viruses and bacteria prepared in advance to the space station, which was tested by Rubens in space, while the ground team members simultaneously sequenced similar samples. After comparison, it was found that the two sequencing results in space and on the earth can be perfectly matched.
