***** May Help Reduce Children's Unexplained Chronic Nausea

According to foreign media reports, heart rate and blood pressure regulation play a key role in the treatment of chronic nausea in children with unexplained causes. A new study by researchers at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center shows that a drug commonly used to treat erectile intolerance (OI) can reduce the symptoms of patients with chronic nausea. When the patient stands for a long time, OI can cause dizziness and occasional fainting.

"There seems to be a link between heart rate, blood pressure and chronic nausea," said John Fortunato, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics at Wake Forest Baptist University and lead author of the study. "When we treat heart rate problems, nausea is reduced."

In the United States, up to 25% of children are affected by chronic nausea of unknown cause, which is a debilitating disease. Because the disease is poorly understood, it is usually focused on reducing gastrointestinal symptoms and there is no very effective treatment.

The retrospective study was published in the August issue of Clinical Autonomic Research, which included 17 patients with OI who were 11-17 years old and had a 1-year history of unexplained nausea and dizziness.

In this study, subjects received 4 weeks of hydrofluorocortisone treatment. Fludrocortisone is a drug that is used in OI patients to slow the extreme acceleration of heart rate and blood pressure drop that occurs when standing. In the study, 65% (11/17) patients had at least a 50% or greater improvement in their nausea after receiving OI treatment with hydrofluorocortisone.

"We now have a more direct approach to the treatment of the disease," said Fortunato. "This is proof of proof of concept and provides us with a realistic possibility of a new treatment."

Based on this study, Fortunato hopes to conduct a larger clinical trial to determine the possibility of using this drug and other potential drugs as a treatment tool for chronic nausea and OI children of unknown cause.
