Research reveals how exercise reduces body fat

Some people may have made up their minds to go to the gym to solve the abdominal fat problem. But have you ever thought about how sports produce this effect? Researchers recently reported in Cell-Metabolism that a signaling molecule called interleukin-6 plays a key role in this process.

As expected, a 12-week cycling intervention can reduce abdominal fat in obese adults. However, it is worth noting that this effect disappeared in participants who received treatment with tocilizumab. This is a drug that blocks the signaling of interleukin-6.

Abdominal fat not only increases the risk of metabolic diseases, but also increases the risk of cancer and dementia. Physical activity can reduce visceral adipose tissue, but its underlying mechanisms are unclear. Some researchers have suggested that adrenaline can regulate this effect. Researchers at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark suspect that interleukin-6 may also play an important role because it regulates energy metabolism and stimulates the breakdown of fat in healthy people.

To test this point, the researchers conducted a 12-week trial in which adults with abdominal obesity were randomized into 4 groups. The 53 participants received an intravenous injection every 4 weeks, including either tocilizumab or saline, without any exercise or a 45-minute bicycle exercise several times a week. The researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to assess the quality of visceral adipose tissue at the beginning and end of the study.

The results showed that exercise in the placebo group reduced visceral fat tissue by an average of 225 grams, or 8%, compared to no exercise. But tocilizumab eliminates this effect. Among exercise participants, tocilizum also increased the quality of visceral adipose tissue by approximately 278 grams compared to the placebo group. In addition, tolizumab increased total cholesterol and "bad" low density lipoprotein in both the exercise and non-exercise groups compared to placebo.

At the same time, the researchers also provided some holiday exercise suggestions. When you start exercising, your weight may increase as your muscle mass increases.
