Silage pH Index and Determination

pH is one of the important indicators to measure the quality of silage. The pH in the laboratory can be measured with a precision pH meter, which can be measured at the production site using a precision litmus paper or an extensive pH test paper.

The range of pH test paper used is as follows: bromophenol blue: 2.8-4.4; bromocresol green: 4.2-5.6; methyl red: 5.4-7.0. Excellent silage pH is below 4.0, good silage pH is between 4.1 and 4.3, general silage pH is between 4.4 and 5.0, inferior silage pH is above 5.0. When the general pH exceeds 4.4 (excluding low-humidity silage), the activity of spoilage bacteria and caseo-acid bacteria is strong during silage fermentation. When measuring, the silage sample was wrapped with three layers of medical gauze and squeezed to obtain crude extract. The filtrate was obtained after filtering by quantitative filter paper, and then measured with a pH meter.
