Small viscosity meter, the protection should not be less

The compact and sophisticated BROOKFIELD viscometer has its own standard operating method. In order to obtain long-term stable, reliable and accurate test data, please be sure to follow the operation manual or operating instructions of the viscometer. Below, let's share some of the basic protections that seem to be insignificant, but critical, during use.

First, the protective cap
1. Be sure to install the protective cap during the movement or transportation of the viscometer. This avoids the strong collision and friction of the jewel bearing system, which leads to inaccurate or even viscous measurements.
2. Remember to remove the protective cap before starting or running the instrument.

Although the action is small, it cannot be ignored!

Second, the rotor loading and unloading and cleaning

All Brookfield viscometers measure extremely small torque changes due to rotor rotation in the sample fluid. Therefore, this requires that the internal friction of the instrument be kept to a minimum.

The Brookfield laboratory standard viscometer has a support system consisting of a PIVOT POINT and a JEWELED BEARING with virtually no friction. This support system is located in the shaft cup (PIVOT CUP) just above the mounting rotor position, as shown below. When installing or unloading the rotor, any downward force or lateral motion can cause significant wear on the support system.

1. Handling of the rotor

1) When you tighten or loosen the rotor, the correct way to install and unload the rotor is to gently lift the nut at the mounting rotor and then lift it up firmly. Also keep in mind that the rotor is fixed from the opposite direction of the thread (left hand direction).

2) If you are using a Wells-Brookfield cone and plate instrument, be sure to use the wrench provided by Brookfield to carefully tighten the nut at the mounting rotor when installing and unloading the cone rotor.

3) Proper operation in accordance with the methods described above will ensure that your Brookfield viscometer or rheometer will provide reliable service over the long term. In addition, the annual recommended gem support system calibration has become part of the calibration service.

2, the cleaning of the rotor

1) Remove the rotor from the instrument before cleaning. Failure to do so may result in serious damage to the instrument.

2) The rotor is made of stainless steel and can be cleaned with a soft cloth and a solvent that is solvable to the sample but not corrosive to the immersed parts.

3) When cleaning the rotor, do not use excessive force to avoid bending the rotor. Or use a hard object to scrape the rotor. Bending or scratching of the rotor can affect the accuracy of the measurement.

Oscillation check

A quick oscillation check can help determine the condition of the instrument's gem bearing system. The steps are as follows:
1. With the rotor not installed, turn on the power and observe if the instrument's display automatically returns to zero;
2. Select the display mode according to the model of the instrument, and type some values as appropriate to see the percentage of torque on the display;
3. Observe whether the value of the torque percentage is within –0.2% to +0.2%;
4. Start the motor to achieve a speed of 10RPM or 12RPM;
5. When the motor starts to turn, the torque percentage reading fluctuates. In a few seconds, the torque percentage reading will stabilize and its value should still be displayed within –0.2% to +0.2%;
6. Then stop the motor again. When the torque percentage is stabilized, its value should be within –0.2% to +0.2%. If the torque percentage is not within this range, the instrument's jewel bearing system has been damaged. Continue to repeat the calibration procedure. If the calibration check is still outside the allowable range, it is very likely that the instrument will need to recalibrate or replace the jewel bearing system.
