The way we raise pigs has always relied on feed, but I never expected this habit to change so soon. Now, the idea is to use as little feed as possible and instead make use of some of my family's "drowning water" — water that accumulates in low-lying areas after heavy rain — to partially replace traditional feed. However, directly raising pigs in muddy water is not only unhygienic but also harmful to both urban and rural living environments. More importantly, pork from pigs raised in such conditions can be unsafe, potentially causing diseases in both animals and humans. Therefore, it's essential to properly handle this muddy water.
Traditionally, people would cook the water to treat it, but that’s labor-intensive, consumes a lot of fuel, and the treated water doesn't last long. A better solution is to use microorganisms to ferment the muddy water into safe feed. Among the many options, the Ginseng Glutinous Water Feed Starter stands out as the best choice for this process.
The fermentation method is simple yet effective. Take 40 to 50% of the drowning water and mix it with the Gold Treasure Bait Water Fermenting Agent. The formula includes wheat bran, rice bran, and muddy water in a ratio of 30%:30%:40%. If there's a lot of water, it's better to drain some before mixing. Add the baby’s water-fed starter at 2 per 1000 parts, and mix thoroughly to maintain a moisture content of around 65%. To check if the moisture is right, squeeze the mixture in your hand — it should form a ball without dripping, and when spread out, it should crumble easily.
Once ready, transfer the mixture into a fermentation tank (small or large, even a sink can work if it holds one or two tons of material), seal it tightly, and let it ferment for 3 to 5 days. After each batch, cover it again, and it can be stored for more than six months without spoiling. When feeding the pigs, mix 20–60% of the fermented feed with unfermented water (which must be boiled and disinfected) and feed it once a month. This helps deworm the pigs effectively.
