During the high-temperature season, water quality can change rapidly due to elevated temperatures. Regular monitoring is essential to maintain a healthy environment for freshwater crayfish. Here are some effective strategies:
First, replace 15–20 cm of water every 3–5 days to keep the water fresh and balanced. Second, aquatic plants may wither quickly in hot weather—remove any dead vegetation promptly to prevent water pollution and maintain a clean habitat. Third, apply microbial preparations every 10–15 days to improve water clarity and biological balance. Lastly, ensure the water transparency remains at 40 cm or higher for optimal conditions.
Feeding during this period should be carefully managed. Freshwater crayfish tend to burrow and become less active during the day, so it’s best to feed them in the evening. Avoid morning feeding and adjust the amount so that only a small amount of feed remains after two hours. This helps prevent overfeeding and reduces water contamination.
Water conservation is crucial in high temperatures, as crayfish often hide in caves, which can slow their growth and make harvesting more difficult. To counter this, maintain a significant coverage of aquatic plants in the pond—ideally 1/2 to 2/3 of the total surface area. If natural plant coverage is low, consider transplanting water peanuts around the pond. Before planting, soak them in a 20 mg/l potassium permanganate solution to disinfect and remove unwanted organisms like fish eggs.
Harvesting is most effective using traps. Once the cages are properly set up, encourage crayfish to move toward the water flow by creating slight turbulence. This increases their activity and improves catch rates. Also, take advantage of their strong appetite by withholding food for 1–2 days before harvesting. Add strong-smelling baits such as fish or fragrant feeds into the trap to lure them in.
For ponds where catching is challenging, first assess the crayfish population. If there are many, try adjusting the water level. Lower the water by half, place additional traps, and gradually refill the pond. The drop in water level stimulates crayfish to move more, and as the water rises, they become more active and likely to enter the traps, significantly improving fishing efficiency.
By following these practices, you can maintain a stable environment, optimize feeding, and increase your overall harvest success during the hot season.
