The US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is currently developing a new type of human brain chip. It is reported that this chip can transplant human brain memory and delete certain memories in the human brain. This is an exciting research project because for most of us, this technology only exists in science fiction.
Imagine we can create a virtual memory by programming a person's brain using a laser, drug, and microchip. This particular technique has been tested on mice. From the experimental results, it seems that the development of this technology is moving in the right direction.
The reason for the DARPA brain chip is simple: first back up the data stored in a person's brain. When the brain is damaged, the implanted chip can transfer the backed up data to the brain to restore its memory. DARPA is currently seeking partnerships with other companies, including Medtronic, which last year studied brain implant devices for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and treated Parkinson's disease by sending electrical signals directly to the brain.
Joseph LeDoux, a neuroscientist at New York University, said: "DRPRA seems to be working hard to get to the forefront of this type of technology. What they do is to implant the chip into the human brain, as if Like a prosthetic, it is used to repair memory."
