Ruiyun, also known as Ruiyun Peony, is a unique plant native to the dry and hot regions of Paraguay. It thrives in warm, sunny, and arid conditions, and is not tolerant of cold temperatures. This plant is drought-resistant and can tolerate partial shade. For optimal growth, it requires well-drained, fertile loamy soil, and winter temperatures should not drop below 10°C.
Propagation of Ruiyun is typically done through cuttings or grafting. Cuttings are best taken between May and June. Young shoots growing near the parent plant are carefully removed, allowed to dry for a short time, and then placed in a sand bed. New roots usually appear within 20 to 25 days. Grafting is performed during June-July or September-October. The rootstock is selected based on the size of an octopod or cactus, and the scion is used for grafting. The process involves a standard grafting technique. After about 10 days, if the graft site heals without turning black, the plant is considered alive. It is then temporarily stored with half of the protection maintained.
During the growing season, Ruiyun should be kept in pots with moist soil and provided with plenty of sunlight. Its spherical form is bright and colorful. In summer, it’s advisable to provide some shade to prevent sunburn, but excessive shading should be avoided, as it may cause the ball to become dark and thorny, reducing its ornamental value. A single application of fertilizer is recommended during the growing season. Each year in May, the soil should be replaced with a mix of nutrient-rich leaf mold, coarse sand, and peat. Every 3 to 4 years, re-grafting is necessary to refresh the ball and maintain its appearance.
Common pests and diseases affecting Ruiyun include anthracnose and stem rot. These can be controlled by spraying a 1500-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim wettable powder. Spider mites are another common issue, which can be managed using a 2000-fold dilution of 40% dimethoate.
Ruiyun is often cultivated as a small cactus-like plant, featuring a grayish-green ball with red accents. It blooms in the summer with pink flowers that close at night. Its large, open structure makes it visually appealing. As a potted plant, it brings a fresh and attractive touch to any indoor space, making it an excellent choice for home decoration. Its vibrant colors and unique shape make it a popular addition to green interiors.
