In recent years, the debate over whether large-scale lawn planting is practical in urban areas has intensified due to high maintenance costs, excessive water consumption, and the unusual concept of not allowing people to enter the grassy areas. However, a new breakthrough has emerged from the Shanghai Science and Technology Agricultural Development Project, which recently approved a key research initiative titled "Study on the Selection, Breeding, and Conservation Management Techniques of Grass-Tolerant Turfgrass." This project aims to explore sustainable and resilient lawn options that could revolutionize urban green spaces.
Field tests have shown that two native grass varieties—“Shanghai Jellyfish JD-1†and “C299 Bermudagrassâ€â€”developed by agricultural experts in Shanghai and Nanjing, are far from being fragile. These grasses can withstand moderate foot traffic, withstanding up to 10 steps per day at the same spot without damage. They can naturally recover and remain usable for more than 300 days a year, making them ideal for public spaces.
Professor Hu Xuehua from the School of Agriculture and Biology at Shanghai Jiaotong University explained that Shanghai experiences extreme temperatures, ranging from -8°C in winter to nearly 40°C in summer. These two native species have adapted well to such conditions and even thrive with minimal irrigation, relying mainly on natural rainfall. This makes them a true rain-fed lawn option. What's particularly impressive is that since their development in the 1990s, they have remained largely pest-free. As a result, their planting and maintenance costs are only about a quarter of those for imported grass species.
According to statistics, there are fewer than five autonomously bred turfgrass species in China. These two “people-friendly†grasses are already being used in several public parks and green spaces, including Fuxing Park, Lujiazui Binjiang Avenue, and Huaihai Park. So far, over 20,000 square meters have been planted, making it the largest trampled public lawn in the country. By the end of 2007, the city plans to expand this area to 200,000 square meters, signaling a significant shift toward sustainable urban landscaping.
