Morphological Characteristics

The plant has a semi-timbered, upright structure with a height ranging from 30 to 180 centimeters. The entire plant contains white milky sap, and the young branches are covered with fine hairs. The leaves are opposite or alternate, with a lanceolate or ovate shape, and their tips are pointed. During the flowering season, which typically occurs from spring to early summer, the inflorescences are arranged in umbels, either axillary or terminal. Each flower has a pedicel, a corolla with five deep lobes that curl upwards, and the corolla is yellow in color. The crown has five golden petals. After flowering, the plant produces follicles, which are oval-shaped and split open when mature.

It can bloom almost all year round in southern regions of the country.

Growth Habits:

Prefers full sun, well-ventilated areas, and warm, dry climates. It is adaptable to various soil types and easy to grow.

Propagation:

Propagated by seeds, usually sown between January and March. The seeds germinate easily, and seedlings can be transplanted once they are strong enough, leading to blooms in summer. During the bud stage, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. After cutting the flowers, improve care, and the plant can flower again in autumn.

Uses:

The Bloodflower has a unique and vibrant appearance, blooming almost all year in southern China. It is mainly used for ornamental purposes in gardens and landscaping. Additionally, the extract is used as an emetic and laxative. The milky sap from the leaves can treat intestinal parasites, and the sap can also help stop bleeding.

Toxicity:

The whole plant is toxic, especially the white milky sap. However, the flowers attract butterflies and pollinators due to their nectar-rich nature. Despite its toxicity, it is not commonly consumed by humans or animals. Ingestion may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, dilated pupils, and breathing difficulties.

Ornamental Species:

There are about 100 species of ornamental value within this family, including: Tubular Milkweed (A. tuberosa) and Largeflower Milkweed (A. grandiflora).
