"Friendly Grass," Water-saving and Stepping

In recent years, the debate over whether large-scale lawn planting is practical in urban areas has intensified due to high maintenance costs, excessive water consumption, and the perception that lawns are not functional. However, a new breakthrough has emerged from the Shanghai Science and Technology Agricultural Development Project, which recently approved a key research initiative titled "Study on the Selection, Breeding, and Conservation Management Techniques of Grass-Tolerant Turfgrass." This project offers a promising solution to the long-standing controversy. Field tests have shown that two native grass varieties—“Shanghai Jellyfish JD-1” and “C299 Bermudagrass,” developed by agricultural experts in Shanghai and Nanjing—are highly resilient. These grasses can withstand pedestrian traffic, as long as the same spot is not trampled more than 10 times per day. Under such conditions, they can recover naturally, making them ideal for public spaces. In fact, these lawns can remain open for over 300 days a year, significantly increasing their usability. Professor Hu Xuehua from the School of Agriculture and Biology at Shanghai Jiaotong University highlighted the adaptability of these native species. With winter temperatures dropping to -8°C and summer highs reaching nearly 40°C, these grasses thrive in Shanghai’s extreme climate. They rely primarily on natural rainfall, making them a low-maintenance, rain-fed option. What makes them even more remarkable is that since their development in the 1990s, no major pests have been reported. As a result, their planting and maintenance costs are estimated to be just one-fourth of those for imported grass species. According to statistics, China has fewer than five autonomously bred turfgrass species. These two “people-friendly” varieties have already been successfully planted in several prominent locations, including Fuxing Park, Lujiazui Binjiang Avenue, and Huaihai Park, covering an area of more than 20,000 square meters—the largest trampled public green space in the country. By the end of 2007, the city plans to expand this area to 200,000 square meters, marking a significant step toward sustainable urban landscaping.
