In May 2007, a groundbreaking non-invasive blood glucose testing technology developed by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Medical and Social Sciences won the prestigious gold award at an international exhibition in Switzerland. This innovative method allows patients to measure their blood sugar levels without the need for traditional finger pricks. Instead, they simply place their thumb on a sensor, and within just five seconds, the device provides accurate results.
The research team, led by Professor Wang Guocheng, spent three years developing this technology. They initially tested it using sugar solutions, measuring light density to determine sugar content. After successful trials with blood samples, they moved on to human clinical studies. The final product uses near-infrared technology, which analyzes the optical density reflected from the skin to calculate blood sugar levels.
Each individual has different skin thickness, so the system is designed to automatically adjust for these variations, ensuring an accuracy rate of up to 85%. This advancement could significantly improve the daily lives of diabetics, allowing them to monitor their condition at home without the discomfort of repeated needle pricks.
Professor Wang revealed that the university has already secured patents for the technology and is currently in talks with three medical device companies to bring the product to market. It is expected to be available within the next nine months, though the exact pricing has not been finalized yet.
This innovation marks a major step forward in diabetes management, offering a more comfortable and efficient alternative to traditional methods. With further development and commercialization, this technology could soon become a standard tool for millions of people worldwide.
