Diseases and Insect Pests and Prevention of Safflower

(1) Root rot is a serious issue that typically occurs in early May, both before and after flowering, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. The disease initially affects the lateral roots, causing them to turn black and gradually spreading to the main root. Once the main root becomes infected, the entire root system begins to rot, leading to the death of the plant. Prevention and control measures are essential to minimize damage. Infected plants should be promptly removed and destroyed by burning to prevent the spread of the disease to healthy plants. It is also recommended to apply quicklime or carbofuran around the affected area to eliminate nematodes. Additionally, watering the soil with a 50% thiophanate solution diluted to 1000 times can help manage the infection effectively. (2) Diamondback moths pose a significant threat to the inflorescences of the plant. When these pests enter the flower clusters, they cause the flowers to wither, which can severely impact the overall yield. To control diamondback moths, it is advisable to spray methamidophos on the foliage during the budding stage, applying it 2–3 times to target the larvae. In cases of locust infestation, dimethoate can be applied at a 1:1000 dilution, with 2–3 sprays recommended to effectively control the pest population. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are crucial for maintaining plant health and ensuring a good harvest.
