How can a fermentation bed avoid becoming a "mud bed" or "blister bed"?
Once the fermentation bed is successfully established, proper maintenance is essential for long-term performance. In our previous technical article, we discussed daily management and maintenance practices, emphasizing that the fermentation bed isn't afraid of three things: it's not afraid of rain, not afraid of wind, and not afraid of dryness. By following these three key principles, you can easily prevent the formation of muddy or blistered beds.
First, the fermentation bed should not be left open like traditional concrete floors exposed to direct sunlight and rain. The primary requirement is that during rain or snow, water must not seep into the bed. However, good air circulation is important, as it helps maintain the microbial activity necessary for the fermentation process. This means the bed is "not afraid of rain but afraid of wind"—in other words, it needs protection from heavy rain, but it benefits from airflow. If the pig density is too high—such as in finishing pens where each pig has less than 1 square meter—the waste may not decompose properly, or water from leaking pipes could flood the bed and damage it. On the other hand, a slightly dry environment doesn’t harm the bed. For example, in a Ginba fermentation bed, pigs can be absent for up to two months without affecting the bed’s functionality. Once pigs return, the bed will restart efficiently. This demonstrates the principle that the bed is "not afraid of dryness but afraid of wetness."
Third, the size of the fermentation bed matters. Except for sow pens, the area should be at least 20 square meters, ideally between 20 and 45 square meters. A smaller bed lacks the capacity to handle waste effectively and makes it harder to manage disease prevention and hygiene. For wooden stalls, the minimum size should be 7 square meters.
By following these three guidelines, you can ensure your fermentation bed remains functional, durable, and eco-friendly, avoiding the problems of mud and blisters. With proper care, it becomes a long-lasting, sustainable solution for animal housing and waste management.
