How can a fermentation bed avoid becoming a "mud bed" or "blister bed"?
After successfully setting up a fermentation bed, proper maintenance is crucial for its long-term performance. In our previous technical article, we discussed daily management and maintenance of the fermentation bed, emphasizing that it's not afraid of three things: "not afraid of rain, not afraid of wind, and not afraid of dryness." If these three key principles are followed, it's easy to prevent the fermentation bed from turning into a muddy or blistered one.
First, the fermentation bed should not be left completely exposed like traditional cement floors. It needs protection from direct rain and snow, as water infiltration can damage the microbial activity. However, good air circulation is essential for the fermentation process. This means the bed should be protected from heavy rain but still allow airflow—hence, "not afraid of rain, but afraid of wind." If the animal density is too high, such as in finishing pig pens where each pig has less than 1 square meter, the waste may not break down properly, or water pipes might leak into the bed, causing damage. On the other hand, a slightly dry environment won’t harm the system. For example, in a Ginba fermentation bed, pigs can be absent for up to two months without affecting the bed’s functionality. Once pigs return, the bed will restart and function normally. This is the principle of "not afraid of dryness, but afraid of wetness."
Third, except for sow pens, the fermentation bed should cover at least 20 square meters, ideally between 20 and 45 square meters. A smaller area reduces the bed’s ability to handle waste and makes disease control and management more difficult. For wooden stalls, the minimum size should be 7 square meters.
By following these three key practices, you can effectively prevent the fermentation bed from becoming a muddy or blistered one. With proper care, your fermentation bed will remain a long-lasting, eco-friendly solution for sustainable farming.
