There are new ways to control locusts

Vegetable worms are a major threat to cruciferous vegetables worldwide, causing significant economic losses each year. Imidacloprid is one of the most commonly used pesticides for controlling aphids on these crops. Traditionally, farmers spray the entire plant when aphid infestations are detected. However, this method not only harms beneficial insects and pollinators but also leads to environmental pollution. Moreover, with repeated use over recent years, the effectiveness of imidacloprid has declined, and its duration of action has become shorter. To address these issues, researchers from the Plant Protection Institute of the Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Ministry of Agriculture's Pesticide Verification Institute have developed a more efficient application method—root absorption. By applying imidacloprid through the soil during sowing or transplanting, they have significantly improved its efficacy. Field tests showed that 5% imidacloprid granules and 10% wettable powder, applied at a rate of 30 g/mu of active ingredient, provided strong control against radish aphids. Within 10–20 days after application, the mortality rate reached up to 98.3%, and by day 25–35, it reached 100%. In addition, field trials confirmed that mixing the pesticide into the soil during planting effectively controlled aphid populations. The treatment remained effective for over a month, providing long-term protection throughout the crop’s growth cycle. Compared to traditional foliar spraying, this method reduces labor costs, protects natural enemies, minimizes environmental impact, and targets pests more precisely. It also helps manage underground pests such as root flies and nematodes. This innovative approach offers a sustainable and efficient alternative to conventional pesticide practices, making it highly promising for widespread adoption in agriculture.
