From June to August, it's the prime season for large-scale fish feeding and rapid growth in aquaculture. However, this period also marks a high-risk time for fish disease outbreaks. Therefore, effective pond management should focus on disaster prevention, proper feeding, and disease control to ensure healthy fish development.
It is essential to raise awareness of potential risks. Every summer brings an increased chance of typhoon and heavy rainstorms. Local governments must prioritize disaster preparedness, while fish farmers should regularly inspect drainage systems, floodgates, and barns around their ponds to prevent landslides and structural damage. Any issues found should be promptly repaired or reinforced to minimize risks.
Water quality management is another critical aspect. During the rainy season, muddy water from mountain torrents often flows into fish ponds, and natural water tends to be acidic. To maintain a balanced pH, farmers can use quicklime to adjust the water. A recommended practice is to apply 15–20 kg of quicklime per acre for every meter of water depth, once every 15 days, keeping the pH between 7.5 and 8.5.
In addition, using probiotics such as photosynthetic bacteria and Bacillus can help restore the aquatic ecosystem after heavy rains, which often disrupt the natural balance. These microorganisms aid in improving water clarity and promoting a healthier environment for fish.
Regular water changes are also important, especially after heavy rainfall when the water becomes murky and may deteriorate quickly. Once the pond stabilizes, it's crucial to flush out the old water and replace it with clean water. Proper aeration is necessary too—especially in the early morning when oxygen levels are low. If the pond is large, multiple aerators may be needed to prevent fish from suffocating due to low oxygen levels.
Fish disease prevention is vital during the hot and wet summer months. Viruses, bacteria, parasites, and harmful algae thrive in these conditions, posing a serious threat to fish health. Regular disinfection using chlorine-based products helps control bacterial and viral infections. A mixture of copper sulfate and ferrous sulfate (in a 5:2 ratio) is effective against parasites and blue-green algae. Quicklime can also be used to regulate water pH. Alongside these measures, feeding fish with vitamin-rich and health-boosting feed enhances their immunity and supports faster growth.
Finally, attention should be given to fish seedling cultivation and management. Due to the harsh winter conditions earlier this year, many young fish, including tilapia, squid, and freshwater snails, were lost. This delayed the breeding season, making it even more important to carefully nurture the remaining seedlings in June. Proper care during this phase will ensure better survival rates for the autumn and winter harvests, and more robust seedlings for next spring’s production. By doing so, fish farming can become more efficient, profitable, and contribute positively to a harmonious and prosperous society.
