In recent years, there has been growing interest in improving dairy cow production. Raising milk bulls has become a popular method for farmers to increase their income. However, many cattle farmers neglect the proper care of high-quality milk bull calves and fail to apply scientific feeding methods, resulting in low economic returns. To help improve the profitability of raising milk bulls, we have compiled the experiences from a successful demonstration village that specializes in fast-growing dairy bulls for reference.
After conducting research, it was found that most black-and-white cows are castrated except for those used for breeding. These cows have excellent feed conversion rates, grow quickly, and produce lean meat. In recent years, many demonstration farms have started raising black-and-white crossbred males with yaks. Raising these calves for 1 to 1.5 years can generate profits of around 400 to 500 yuan per animal. With a daily intake of 100 kilograms of milk and some milk replacer, the live weight can reach 350 kg at one year old and 450–500 kg at 1.5 years. Some farmers in the demonstration villages have fed sawdust-based mixtures to calves for 5 to 9 months, which showed high digestibility, minimal odor in feces, and fewer gastrointestinal issues. The meat from these calves is white and tender after slaughter.
The mixture formula includes: 3 kg of corn flour, 1.15 kg of bran, 0.75 kg of soybean or sunflower cake, 0.05 kg of bone meal and salt, and 2.3 kg of sawdust. Sawdust makes up about 31.5% of the total mix, primarily poplar sawdust.
Farmers should be aware that if they plan to slaughter the bull calves at one year of age, castration is not necessary. Breeding experience shows that while castration helps with weight gain, it may temporarily slow growth after the procedure. If farmers intend to raise the calves until they are 1.5 or even 2 years old, castration is recommended. It is best to perform castration when the calf is around one year old. According to breeding practices, spring is the optimal season for castration, and most improved cattle are castrated at one year of age.
