A research team in Japan has developed a life management system for people with diabetes that automatically collects and analyzes patient activity and health data to guide their lives.
The system, developed by researchers from Kyushu Institute of Technology and Kyushu University, consists of an internal motion meter with accelerometers, a weight scale, a sphygmomanometer, a blood glucose meter, a mobile phone, and a home server connected to the Internet.
After the diabetic patient hangs the palm-sized action meter on the waist, the action meter can determine whether the patient is running or walking based on the patient's acceleration. Both the mobile meter and the sphygmomanometer have radio components that automatically transmit the acquired data to the home server and mobile phone.
Next, the life guidance program developed by the researchers will automatically analyze the patient activity data collected, as well as the measured patient health data such as the weight scale and blood glucose meter. The program accumulates symptoms and lifestyle data for more than 3,000 diabetic patients. According to the comparison between the patient data and the stored data, the server will promptly send a message to the patient's mobile phone, such as "go away again", "blood sugar value is too high, please go to the hospital".
The researchers conducted a three-month trial of the system from 52 people aged 30 to 70 years old from November last year. The results showed that patients who used the system had more patients who went to the hospital in time than those who did not use the system, and some patients with a risk of rapid deterioration of symptoms were able to be detected as early as possible.
The researchers hope that the system will be put into commercial production after three years. In addition to diabetics, they also hope to apply this system to the health management of patients with metabolic syndrome and the care services for the elderly.
