Summer seedling management

Summer is like a blazing fire, and proper care of young seedlings is crucial. To ensure that nursery stock survives the hot season, it's essential to follow the "Five Key Practices." 1. **Keep the soil consistently moist**. If seedlings show signs of drought stress, water them promptly through irrigation or manual watering. The goal is to keep the seedbed damp and the soil cool, which helps reduce heat stress on the roots. 2. **Loosen the soil carefully**. Avoid working the soil during the hottest part of the day, especially on sunny days in dry weather. Studies show that loosening the soil at noon can increase surface temperature by up to 8°C compared to unloosened soil. It’s best to loosen the soil or weed in the early morning, late afternoon, or after rain. Always avoid touching the delicate roots of the seedlings to prevent damage. 3. **Fertilize with care and consistency**. Apply fertilizer in small amounts rather than all at once. Water or lightly apply the fertilizer in the morning or evening, avoiding direct application between the seedlings. Fertilization should be done after soil loosening and weeding to ensure even distribution and better absorption. 4. **Provide shade and mulch**. Covering the soil surface with straw or grass clippings helps retain moisture and keeps the ground cooler. Shading can lower the temperature around the seedlings by about 10°C. Creating a shaded environment supports healthy growth and protects the plants from intense sunlight. 5. **Monitor for pests and diseases**. Keep the nursery area clean by clearing ditches and removing debris. Regularly spray a Bordeaux mixture for disinfection to prevent fungal infections. If any unusual pests or diseases appear, identify them as soon as possible and take action. If unsure, contact local forestry authorities for expert advice and timely intervention. By following these five practices, you can significantly improve the survival rate of your seedlings during the summer months. Proper management not only helps the plants endure the heat but also lays a strong foundation for their future growth.
