Xiaqiu sericulture to "five defenses"

During the summer silkworm rearing season, it's a critical time for pest control, and preventing pesticide poisoning is essential. Farmers must ensure that all agricultural chemicals are kept away from mulberry fields and silkworms to avoid contamination of the mulberry leaves. When spraying pesticides near the silkworm house, windows and doors should be tightly closed immediately. Silkworms should only be fed with mulberry leaves that have not been exposed to insecticides, using organic nitrogen-based pesticides instead if necessary. Failure to do so may result in severe poisoning and even death of the silkworms. Before feeding silkworms, farmers must wash their hands and change into clean clothes to prevent any chemical residue from contaminating the food. It's also important to spray the mulberry leaves with foliar fertilizer or moisten them before feeding. The use of equipment that has previously handled pesticides is strictly prohibited. Before feeding large quantities of mulberry leaves, a small trial feeding should be done first to confirm that the leaves are safe and non-toxic. In summer and autumn, common pest control products often contain pyrethrin, which can cause long-term harm to silkworms. Similarly, mosquito repellents like Radar and Mop are highly toxic and should never be used inside the silkworm room. If these products are used near the silkworm house, the area must be completely sealed off to prevent exposure. Flies are another major threat during the warmer months. To protect silkworms, screens should be installed on doors and windows to block flies from entering. If needed, fly-killing sprays can be used carefully, but always with caution to avoid harming the silkworms. Rodent control is also crucial. Before raising silkworms, all rat holes should be sealed. Keep the silkworm frames at a distance from walls and spread lime powder or silkworm medicine around the base of the frames to prevent rats from climbing up. Keeping cats in the silkworm area can significantly reduce rodent damage and improve overall safety. During the hot summer months, maintaining a cool environment in the silkworm room is essential. Spraying well water early in the day and hanging damp cloths or wet grass curtains can help lower the temperature. Keep doors and windows closed during the day to block out hot air. At night, when temperatures drop, open all windows and spray the mulberry leaves with clean water. Using electric fans to circulate air indoors is also an effective way to manage high temperatures and create a healthier environment for the silkworms.
