Summer meat sheep production management measures

In summer, proper grazing and management are essential to keep sheep healthy and productive. First, focus on grazing methods. During hot weather, sheep tend to gather and eat more. It’s best to start grazing early in the morning, once the dew has dried. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., allow sheep to rest in shaded areas and graze on grass. Evening grazing can begin around 7 p.m. On sunny days, choose dry pastures, while on hot days, opt for shaded spots to avoid heat stress. Second, ensure proper cooling. Sheep can become agitated in the summer, so it's important to let them rest and cool down daily. Avoid rushing them into the barn at noon. Instead, provide shade for resting and drinking. After evening grazing, let them walk slowly to help lower their body temperature before returning to the shelter. Third, be cautious of wind and rain. Summer storms are common, and sudden rain or thunder can cause illness. If possible, avoid grazing during bad weather. In rainy conditions, cover the flock with tarps to keep them dry. Also, avoid steep slopes during thunderstorms to prevent injuries from lightning. Fourth, maintain salt and water supply. Provide light saltwater 4–6 times a day, with about 8–10 grams of salt per sheep. Ensure that sheep don’t eat dewy grass, as it can cause diarrhea. Avoid letting them drink from stagnant ponds or muddy areas, which can lead to infections or parasites. Fifth, keep the environment clean. High humidity in summer can lead to dampness in the pens, increasing the risk of parasites. Maintain good ventilation, cleanliness, and dryness in the sheep house. Regularly clean feeding areas, and disinfect regularly. Keep feed and water sources free from mold, toxins, and foreign objects. Sixth, use insecticides. From mid-May to early June, use Afudin (5g per 50kg of body weight) to control ticks, mites, and other parasites. Repeat the dose after 7–10 days. Do not bathe the sheep after two treatments. Lambs born in spring should be dewormed in the fall, with strict dosage control. Seventh, monitor for diseases. Always observe the behavior, appetite, and feces of your sheep, especially lambs. If any signs of infection appear, isolate the affected animals immediately and consult a vet. Proper disposal of dead animals is crucial to prevent disease spread. Eighth, improve the sheep house. Choose a well-ventilated, elevated area for the shelter. The height should be around 2 meters for better insulation and drainage. Ensure the entrance has a slight slope but remains even to prevent injury. The floor should be firm and dry, avoiding overly tight enclosures. Ninth, care for pregnant ewes and lambs. Avoid overcrowding when grazing, and prevent jumping over ditches or climbing steep slopes. Feed pregnant ewes with fresh milk and manage them in single lines to avoid abortions. Provide extra concentrate to lambs for better growth. By following these practices, you can ensure the health and well-being of your sheep throughout the summer season.
