Chrysanthemum August Management Points and Pest Control

Chrysanthemum, commonly known as the "Nine Flowers" or "Yellow Flowers," is a perennial herb belonging to the Asteraceae family. It holds a special place in Chinese culture and has been cherished for centuries. As one of the world's four major cut flowers, it is not only admired for its beauty but also valued for its medicinal properties. In traditional Chinese medicine, chrysanthemum flowers are used to clear heat, detoxify the body, and dispel wind pathogens. It is widely cultivated across China and plays an important role in both horticulture and herbal medicine. In August, proper management is crucial for healthy growth. One key step is to prune the mother plant to encourage better blooming and prevent overcrowding. This helps maintain air circulation and reduces the risk of disease. Pest and weed control is also essential during this time. One common disease affecting chrysanthemums is Chrysanthemum blight caused by *Phytophthora* species. This disease thrives in high humidity and warm conditions, making it particularly prevalent from May to October in southern China and from August to September in northern regions. To manage the disease, early intervention is critical. Spraying 30% basic copper sulfate at 400 times dilution, or a 1:1:100 Bordeaux mixture, can be effective. Other options include 80% Capitacan WP at 500 times, 50% thiophanate-methyl suspension at 800 times, 75% carbendazim WP at 600 times, and 50% benomyl WP at 1500 times. Additionally, new high-fat film coatings can help protect plants. Applications should be repeated every 10–15 days, with 3–5 treatments depending on the severity of the infection. Proper care and timely treatment ensure that chrysanthemums remain healthy and vibrant throughout the growing season. (Source: China Plant Protection Network, Wei Linfei)
